The proposal won the international competition for the design of the Hanoi Velodrome for the Asia Games to be hosted by Vietnam. Track cycling and betting on the results is a very popular past-time in Vietnam.
The design of the velodrome in its shape and woven facade is based on an upside-down traditional vietnamese hat while the general layout with 5 access points to the building refers to the 5-point star from the vietnamese flag.
The development consisted of far more than just the velodrome which has a 10.000 seat capacity. In addition a 42.000m2 shopping mall, cinema, bowling, 145.000m2 of office and more than 1.100 car parking spots.
